*** “WORKING” FIRE ***

Just before 0430 hours the truck company was alerted to respond to the 2600blk of Queens Chapel Road in Company 1’s first due for the reported apartment fire. Initial units arrived on scene with smoke showing from a 8 story apartment building. The truck arriving as the search company with 7 members split into an exterior and larger interior team. The fire which was located in a trash compactor in the basement had spread a decent smoke condition to multiple floors and the stairwell. This building in particular has 97 units; so well over 100 occupants were awoken by the fire alarm system and met with smoke and now trying to evacuate the building. A shelter in place order was given by command and crews assisted occupants in doing so. Trash compactor fires are notoriously difficult fires. Compactors will typical be fed by a trash chute that has openings on every floor; acting as a chimney for smoke to reach every floor very quickly and easily. Truck 9 and other crews went down through the stairwell and into the basement where they were met with low visibility due to smoke with no heat. The compactor was located and opened up and a line was placed in service on the floor above to extinguish the burning rubbish inside. The long and arduous task of ventilation and overhauling then began. These fires may not be your more traditional room and contents, but they still require companies to be heads up. This is because they have the chance of becoming a serious problem due to smoke conditions reaching higher floors quickly and potentially trapping occupants. Truck 9 remained on scene for over 2 hours before being released by command.

Taking advantage of the 67° day to do some Truck training, reviewing ladder pipe operations. It's a team effort. Constant training + aggressiveness = Lives n Property saved.

The men are under the watchful eye of Miles, our firehouse dog.
